So you decided you want to grow a beard, or maybe you already have one and you want to take a little better care of it? Well there are three products that I believe are must have items for someone who wants an all around better beard.
The first product is beard oil. Beard oil usually consists of a carrier oil such as almond oil or jojaba oil, and then fragrances are added and usually vitamin E oil. I prefer beard oils that use essential oils for fragrance rather than the nasty synthetic stuff, because honestly it’s better for you and it smells better too. When applying beard oil, a little goes a long way. Put a few drops in to your palm, rub your palms together, and then rub your hands through your beard. Beard oil can really help with dry beards and they overall keep your beard looking and smelling fresh.
The second product is beard balm. Beard balm usually contains bees wax, shea butter, cocao butter, and some carrier oils and essential oils for smell. It has a thicker consistency than beard oil, and can be used as a light to medium weight styling hold for your beard. It’s not going to be able to tame the wildest of beards, but if you have a couple stray hairs every now and then, a good application of beard balm can do the trick. Like beard oil, beard balm can hydrate the skin and hair and make your beard look and feel better.
The last product is beard wax. Sometimes the line between beard balm and beard wax is blurred, as someones you can get some beard balms that are pretty firm, but for the most part beard wax is a lot firmer than beard balm and does a better job at keeping the beard in line if you have a lot of unruly beard hairs. It shares a lot of the same ingredients of beard wax, but it’s usually heavier on the wax than the butters, which give it the stronger hold. Mustache wax would also fall in the same category as beard wax. Both are great at keeping your beard in place if you want to style it a certain way.
One last thing I’d like to mention is getting some kind of beard comb. Running oil, balm, or wax through your beard with your hands can only get you so far. If you have a good beard comb it can really help in distributing the products evenly throughout your beard. Here is the beard comb I currently use from Amazon, Kent’s Beard Comb. (affiliate link*). It’s nothing fancy but it gets the job done.
So those are the three products I recommend all beardsman have in their product repertoire: beard oil, beard balm, and beard wax. (and the bonus beard comb to help with application).
